Vintage Seattle Beachhouse perfect hideaway
We wanted to find a comfortable romantic beach bungalow with its own beach on an island with thick forests and a verdant landscape, so we head for San Juan Islands, right? Well not exactly. If you live in the Seattle area think think closer – Bainbridge Island.
There is a reason why people who live on Bainbridge Island to pay through the nose for commuters and ferry set up with the inconvenience of schedule on any trip to Seattle for there is a minimum waiting at the ferry terminal. They go through all that because Puget Sound buffers really the big city and helps to maintain a lifestyle completely different. Island life is just different – it's slower, It is quieter, there are fewer people and, for many residents of the island, their houses are hidden in the dense woods under a canopy that makes them feel as if they were the only people on earth. Others enjoy spectacular views of the sound of their waterfront homes.
Visitors can share some of this way of life by jumping from the Bainbridge Island ferry, which takes place at least every hour and sometimes more often than that. You drive on the ferry to the down to the waterfront in Seattle and just half an hour later, driving in Eagle Harbor, which could equally well be a small town in the San Juan. The change of landscape almost magical.
We had been looking for a narrow range of refuge somewhere in Seattle that was easy to access, but a total change in the big city. We have fond memories of visits years, we have paid for a tiny beach house on the south side of Vashon a few minutes 15 minutes ferry from Point Defiance Park. We were looking for the same kind of loneliness and access to the beach where we knew we were going to spend countless hours exploring the coastline or reading good books that we were sitting on top of a newspaper or beach chair looking up from our pages from time then look incredible in Puget Sound.
A thorough search of the Internet is up some possibilities on Bainbridge Island that emerged was Bainbridge announced a "Island Beach Cottage." As we have studied the issue further, the description has hit all the right buttons for us – it was a "classic 1930s cabin" and Pleasant Beach a few miles across the island from the ferry terminal. According photos, there was no better word to describe the cabin charm.
We called to make reservations a month before, but we noticed Right after the booking calendar on this cabin was pretty full for the period June we were looking for. Our program allowed us to slip for a Wednesday evening, which was actually open. Just the fact that the cottage has been booked most weekends has confirmed for us that we made the right choice.
Our ferry trip to Bainbridge was so fast we did not even bother to get out of the car. Unlike the Anacortes-San Juan Islands run – where we always point to walk around the ferry and get amazing photos of the archipelago and enjoy a snack or a drink – Ferry Bainbridge is almost over before it starts. Depending on when you arrive, however, you may need to add another 30-60 minutes waiting time on the Seattle waterfront before boarding your ferry.
We came across a pizzeria next to the ferry. We ordered our pizza – which was ready in 15 minutes – and drove another 10 minutes from the cottage. It was easy to find and, unlike some cottages you see on the Internet, this place was everything we thought it would. We opened the door to a cabin of a room (bathroom and toilet) which included a kitchen, dining table and a quasi-life lounge room with queen bed – all decorated in beige or yellow or blue and white with knotty pine floors. The kitchen is complete with coffee maker, microwave, dishes and silverware, stove, refrigerator – everything we would need.
After finishing our pizza, we have begun to realize how special were the reasons. The cabin has a porch at the old and a couple of rocking chairs that are perfect for enjoying a postcard view of the expansive Green Lawn and, beyond, the water of Puget Sound. The trees and shrubs surround three sides the house, while the lilacs and other flowers add variations Highlights lawn. Interestingly, the home owners live next door their own well-kept house on the same vintage.
We took a walk on the beach where, with the flow of the tide, it is possible to walk All Around the entrance. The cottage has met our expectations and was exactly the kind of refuge we were looking for. But we also wanted to see something Bainbridge Island.
The island has several local and national parks have been set aside to allow access for residents the beach, and enjoy some of the woodlands of the island. We stopped by Fay Bainbridge State Park, where we found almost unused during our visit in midweek. It's not for lack of attractiveness – this park has beautiful views of the continent and the skyscrapers of Seattle. This park has long stretches of wide, cascading driftwood, and many picnic spots.
But the piece de resistance of our trip Bainbridge was a visit to the Bloedel Reserve – something we had heard about while living many years in the Northwest, but had never had the chance to visit. The Bloedel Reserve is 150 acres of forests and gardens which have been set aside by lumber baron Prentice Bloedel and his wife, Virginia. Although less curious first of the need for booking, after we have arrived at the reserve, we understood the why. The experience would not just be the same if too many people were in the reserve at a time.
After calling to follow for our reservation, we arrived at the bungalow where the hostess gave us a map and a brief explanation on the provision of reserve. We began our tour of two hours following the well marked trail that led into a meadow and into thick forests – mainly Douglas fir, red cedar and hemlock – that seemed like the trees were there since time began. If you wondered what the forest looked like in Hansel and Gretel, it was no doubt.
The trail weaves through several different sites in the reserve, including a Zen garden, a moss garden, a pool of reflection and several ponds. Approximately half of the tour, you can visit the first floor of the old house Bloedel, a French chateau-style building overlooking the bay of Port Madison and others from Puget Sound items.
The quiet solitude of the reserve was the perfect ending to our island getaway memory and offers a striking contrast to our short ferry ride back to reality.
