The very first thing to do upon your arrival is to hit the local home décor store. You should purchase all the practical storage cabinets and shelves you’ll need for your bedrooms, kitchen utensils, food, laundry, and home entertainment system.

How to drill into brick motar when drill bit will only go in 1/4″?

My garage wall is brick mortar. I am hanging the rubbermaid Fasttrack rail (organizer). I was able to put one up but now when I drill the bit only goes in about 1/4inch. I am using a drill and bit designed for this material. It’s like I am hitting something. I thought it might be rebar but doesn’t that run vertically through the brick? I have tried hanging another rail a few feet below the one already up and same problem I can only get about 1/4″ into the wall. If I was hitting rebar I should not have been able to place on directly above it. Suggestions would be great! As I am stuck with what to do next.

There should not be rebar in the mortar joints of brick. Small rebar is 3/8″, the mortar joints in brick are usually not much thicker. There may be some other metal reinforcement there, but it should be rather thin. Your drill may hesitate a bit, but should go right on through.

You have a masonry bit, are you using the right drill? You should have a rotary hammer drill. A standard rotary drill will do the job, but you will have to pull it out to clean debris from the hole then go back in. It will be quite a bit slower than it would with a hammer drill.

Is the bit in good condition? Have the carbide points broken off?

Finally, are you sure the drill is turning the correct direction? Drilling backwards will make a dent, but not really do any major drilling. Probably will ruin the bit as well, so you may need a new one.

i have some green beans that have yellow leaves on them on the bottom and some shrivled up leaves on top can i take my pruner and cut them off? can i take my pruner and cut the tomatoes and cukes as well?

Other than removing diseased foliage (and it can be pinched off, you don’t need a pruner) you really don’t need to prune beans or cukes. With tomatoes, remove the suckers (those are the little branches that grow in the crotch of bigger branches) for larger fruit.

For rabbits, I’ve heard that scattering dog hair in the garden keeps them away. I’ve also heard peeing around the perimeter will also work, but I have not ever tried these. The bunnies tend to stay out, I think they have enough clover in the lawn to eat. You can also get predator urine (fox, wolf) through hunting supply firms.

For tomatoes, I use stakes, tie the stems to the stakes, and tie more as they grow.

Effortless Care and Keeping of Virtually Maintenance-free Retractable Awnings

Part of the appeal of retractable awnings, and one feature which makes them a practical asset for both home and business owners, is how easy it is to keep them looking beautiful and functioning smoothly. For a retractable awning, “maintenance†boils down to occasional washing and routinely closing it to keep the awning fabric and frame in prime condition.

Gentle Cleaning

The major concern for retractable awning fabric is stains caused by leaves, vines, tree sap, and other elements like smoke, particularly in autumn as leaves fall and plants begin to die back. Cleaning an awning has only two steps:

1.    Use a broom to gently remove leaves and debris.

2.    Hose down the awning, making sure to avoid the end of the awning with the motor, if motorized.

For a more thorough cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush and dish soap, working from the bottom up. If there is a persistent stain, mix a quarter cup of soap and a half cup of bleach in One Gallon of lukewarm water, and soak the stain for 20 minutes, then rinse.

There are some things to avoid when cleaning a retractable awning:

·        Do not use a pressure cleaner, as it will damage the fabric.

·        To prevent mold, mildew, or water stains, make sure that the awning is completely dry before closing it, unless there are high winds.

·        Never use detergent on retractable awning fabric and avoid using the bleach-soap cleaner when possible. Most high quality retractable awning fabrics have several fabric treatments to prevent mildew and stains; harsh cleaners remove that treatment.

·        Avoid heat. Some solution-dyed acrylic fabrics are heat-sensitive and can shrink in steam-cleaning, dryers, and hot water.

Seasonal Storage Means Keep It Closed

Most awning frame damage comes from some kind of stress, either high winds or gusts which twist the frame or weight from heavy rain, snow, even lots and lots of leaves, which can distend the fabric and bend the frame.

It is not necessary to take down a retractable awning to protect it in winter. Just close it. Many retractable awnings have an optional hood, a shield which covers the awning when it is retracted and offers additional protection for the fabric. In winter, it can also be helpful to remove the valance, the strip of fabric which hangs at the front of the awning.

What Makes the Difference

Retractable awnings are much easier to maintain than fixed awnings or canopies for two major reasons: the fact that the awning retracts and the materials that make it.

UV rays, high wind, gusts, and rain – basically, normal weather – cause the most damage to awnings. Fading, molding, and tearing fabric. Twisting fixed frames from high wind damage or the weight of snow or pooling rain. In only two or three years, fixed awnings and canopies already show substantial wear, which is why the lifetime of most fixed awnings and canopies is only five or six years before the awning need to be replaced.

Retractable awnings are closed when not in use, which cuts weather damage. That makes the maintenance much easier on retractable awnings compared to permanent awnings and canopies – there is no need to hunt down replacement parts, replace fabric every couple of years, or attempt to wrangle awnings down and into storage for winter.

How easy an awning is to maintain depends a lot on how it is made, and there are differences between retractable awnings. The fabric on low-quality awnings, particularly cheaper fabrics like canvas and vinyl, is the component most vulnerable to damage: rotting or mildew from rain and humidity, sun exposure, frayed seams, cracking, and fading. Quality retractable awning companies use solution-dyed acrylic, a chemical fiber with the color embedded into it. Solution-dyed acrylic is a woven fabric, so it dries quickly, avoiding mold or mildew. Since is a synthetic fiber, it doesn’t rot. And, since the color is part of the fiber itself, it lasts as long as 15 years before being replaced.     

 

Other retractable awning features impact how well the awning wears, and, therefore, how easy it is to maintain:

·        Electro-statically powder-coated aluminum frames to resist corrosion and chipping

·        Sealed and self-lubricating retractable awning motors

·        Weather-sealed wind, motion, rain, and sun sensors and other accessories

·        Stainless-steel mounting hardware to prevent staining or bleeding from rust

·        Kevlar® brand straps in the arms, not steel cables which will rust

·        TÜV product approved and Eurolab certified frames

These components make the average lifetime of a retractable awning 12-15 years for fabric and 25 years for the frame – almost five times longer than most fixed awnings or canopies, and without the need to professional cleaning or seasonal storage problems. With retractable awnings, the keyword for maintenance is effortless.

The Controversy Surrounding Led Grow Lights

Anytime a new product is introduced on the market, there can be a bit of controversy surrounding it based on whether it actually works as marketed.  Such is the case with LED grow lights.  Although there has been some disagreement over how well the bulbs work for growing plants indoors, research indicates that the controversy is not founded.

Some have speculated that one of the benefits of LED grow lights may also be a drawback:  case in point is the fact that LED grow lights run very cool and produce very little excess heat, unlike other lamps such as HPS lights and MH lights.  It has been said that plants grow more leggy under LED grow lights than other grow lamps such as HPS lights.  Light is not the only item that plants need for proper growth.  Bottom heat is needed to get seeds to germinate, and warm conditions are usually optimal for fast plant growth.  Since other grow lights such as 1000 HPS lights put off more heat, it can contribute to warmer growing conditions.  This may mean that a heat source might be needed for use with LED grow lamps to bring on equal growth results.1  

Another area that some claim as controversial is that additional blue spectrum is needed for stocky stem growth in plants than is given by LED lights.  NASA has performed some testing by its Astroculture Flight Unit, where they determined that LED lamps with eighty percent red spectrum and twenty percent blue spectrum produced better growth than HPS lights and other HID lights, yet neither produced better growth than sunlight.2   If you want to boost the bloom cycle, you may choose to add additional blue spectrum LED lights to mimic summer sunlight and the resultant productivity of plants in response.  Some of the latest LEDs also allow you to adjust the amount of each spectrum, so you can adjust them for optimal plant growth.

There are many benefits from LED lights.  They require less equipment to operate than both HPS lights and MH lights.  Unlike these traditional lamps, the LED needs no ballast, fans or reflectors to operate at optimal levels.  LED bulbs also last longer, up to five to eight years longer than HPS lights.  

HPS lights are also a good choice for plant lighting.  Although they run hot and do not last as long as LEDs, they also have a lower initial cost than many LED lights, and come in blue, red and full color spectrums.

It has been suggested that perhaps a combination of both LED and 1000 HPS lights could produce optimal results.  The 1000 HPS lights would bring heat as a byproduct of the lighting, warming the growing space without the need for the additional purchase of heaters.  The LEDs can add additional blue light as needed.3
