The word hammock means a lot of different things. The meaning most people think of at first is a place to rest or relax in. Normally a hammock is a center piece tied to two standing points. The standing points can be walls, poles, trees, just about anything that you can stretch a hammock between.

The hammock was first made be natives who wanted to sleep above the ground. The reason why they hung hammocks was because of bugs, snakes, and other things that will bite. It helped to keep them out of the mud or rainwater in the rain forest. The hammock was used before recorded time by people who did not leave a history. It was also used on a ship where there is little room.

No one knows who actually made the first hammock. The most popular place for them was the South American jungles. Many villages have used hammocks exclusively for sleeping for centuries. Even the army has been known to use them. Theirs is the advanced version that is made from canvas and has more uses than just sleeping or relaxing.

Hammocks today are generally used as a backyard relaxation item or by the military. Some hikers or campers use hammocks as well. In warm climates hammocks are used for sitting or napping on porches or in the backyard. There are a lot of different types of hammock. The two main types are indoor hammocks and outdoor hammocks. There are also one person and two person hammocks. Some hammocks come with stands so that you do not need two things to hang them between.

You can buy hammocks in a lot of different places. They are available online, in garden stores, department stores, and often in specialty shops. Most people do not use hammocks as a primary bed any more but they do use them to relax. There are both indoor and outdoor hammocks.

Normally the hammocks meant for inside are colorful and made from fabric. The ones meant for outside are usually canvas or rope. The outdoor hammocks have to be replaced more frequently than indoor kind. Outdoor hammocks need special care or to be brought in when not in use if you want to keep them for any length of time.

No matter which hammock you buy it should give you many years of enjoyment. It will last as long as you care for it properly. Just remember a hammock is a great place to rest on a lazy afternoon.
