An electrolyte is a substance containing free ions which behaves as an electrically conductive medium.
A conductivity tester tries to pass an electrical current through the material to be tested. If the material conducts electricity, a complete circuit is formed, an electrical current flows. The bulb is in series with the object being tested, so if the object conducts electricity, the current goes through the bulb also and it lights up.
